Tandem skydiving: what it is and how it works

The basics

Tandem skydiving is designed for first-timers. You're securely attached to a professional jumpmaster, who handles the technical parts of the jump while you take in the views. After a short safety briefing and harness fitting, you'll board the aircraft. Depending on your ticket, you can jump from 8,000, 10,000, or 15,000 ft.

The jump experience

Once you reach your jump altitude, you exit the aircraft with your jumpmaster and enter freefall. An 8,000 ft jump gives you around 20 seconds of freefall, while a 10,000 ft jump gives you around 40 seconds and a 15,000 ft jump around 60 seconds. The parachute then opens for a slower descent toward your coastal landing area.

Your equipment

Your jumpmaster fits your harness and provides the safety equipment needed for the experience. You'll receive a pre-flight briefing before boarding and instructions for the jump and landing. Your instructor manages the equipment and technical stages throughout the experience.

Above all, safety first: know how tandem skydiving works

Your tandem experience is led by a professional jumpmaster who manages the technical parts of the jump. Before boarding, you'll receive a safety briefing and have your harness fitted and checked. Follow your instructor's directions throughout the aircraft exit, freefall, parachute descent, and landing.

Your ticket includes the harness and safety equipment needed for the tandem jump. Your jumpmaster fits and checks your gear before you board the aircraft. The equipment keeps you securely connected throughout the jump and canopy descent.

Tandem skydiving has age, weight, and health requirements that vary by operator and ticket. Check the requirements for your selected experience before booking. If you have a medical condition that could affect your ability to skydive, speak to a doctor before your jump.

Skydiving depends on suitable weather conditions. Wind, cloud, and visibility can affect whether a jump can operate. Allow some flexibility in your schedule in case your jump time changes because of weather.

  • Exit: Your jumpmaster controls the exit from the aircraft and keeps you secure throughout the jump.
  • Freefall: Expect around 20 seconds from 8,000 ft, 40 seconds from 10,000 ft, or 60 seconds from 15,000 ft, depending on your ticket.
  • Landing: Your jumpmaster controls the parachute and guides you toward the beach or coastal landing area.

What to expect on the day

Check-in & briefing

Arrive at your selected drop zone and complete check-in before meeting your jumpmaster. You'll receive a pre-flight safety briefing covering what to expect during the jump and landing.

Gear up

Your jumpmaster fits your harness and checks your safety equipment. Follow the instructions provided before boarding the aircraft.

Flight ascent

Board the aircraft and climb toward your selected altitude. Depending on your ticket, you'll jump from 8,000, 10,000 or 15,000 ft.

The jump & freefall

Exit the aircraft with your jumpmaster and experience around 20 seconds of freefall from 8,000 ft, 40 seconds from 10,000 ft, or 60 seconds from 15,000 ft.

Parachute glide

After freefall, your parachute opens, and you descend more slowly toward the landing area. Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles experiences offer coastal views throughout the descent.

Landing

Your jumpmaster controls the descent and guides you toward the landing area. St Kilda finishes with a beach landing, while Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles experiences land near the coast.

Photos & videos

Selected tickets offer photo and video packages so you can keep footage of your freefall and landing. Check your ticket for available media options.

Know before you go

Your jump begins with a safety briefing and harness fitting. A professional jumpmaster manages the technical parts of your tandem experience, including the aircraft exit and landing.

St Kilda Beach is the most convenient option if you're staying in Melbourne. The Great Ocean Road experience starts at Barwon Heads Airport, around an hour's drive from Melbourne. Selected Great Ocean Road tickets include transfers.

Your jump depends on weather and operating conditions. Keep your schedule flexible and allow extra time around your booking in case conditions affect the jump sequence.

Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move easily and suitable closed-toe footwear. Your operator will provide the required skydiving equipment and harness.

Age, weight and health requirements vary by ticket and operator. Check the conditions for your selected experience before booking, particularly if you're travelling with a minor or have a medical condition.

Wind, cloud and visibility can affect skydiving operations. If conditions aren't suitable, your jump may be delayed or rescheduled. Keep some flexibility in your Melbourne itinerary.
